Mission Statement for THE DRUM EXCHANGE:

The mission of The Drum Exchange is to educate anyone interested in percussion, and help them make intelligent decisions about choosing musical equipment. The Drum Exchange is then available to get the right equipment to the right customer, at a reasonable and competitive price.

History of THE DRUM EXCHANGE:

The Drum Exchange was founded in 1992 by Ed Hartman, a professional percussionist, in Seattle, WA. Ed is a teacher, performer, composer, and recording artist. For a few years, Ed had been subleasing a teaching studio from John's Music, in the University District. Both John and Ed then moved to their current location in in the Wallingford District. Over time, John's Music became more involved in hand drums and percussion, while Ed's teaching was more focused on drumset, mallet and concert percussion students. One of Ed's students asked if Ed could help sell his drumset. At first, Ed said no, knowing what was involved in selling equipment. After a few days, he agreed to sell the set, and that was the first retail sale. In the next month, four more sets came in. Over the next few years, The Drum Exchange was named, and all kinds of drums and mallet instruments came in. The Drum Exchange built up a stock of parts, and begin taking repairs. Over the years, the store has gathered a tremendous amount drum equipment information. The focus of the store has been practical use of musical instruments, rather than collectables. Making instruments work for musical performance has always been the goal.

New drumsets are now offered alongside used kits, and the store continues to grow. The Drum Exchange has become an excellent resource for information about mallet instruments (vibes, marimbas, xylophones, and bells). Next store is John's Music, as always, creating a 'mini mall" of percussion. Ed has a full load of weekly students, performs regionally and occassionally nationally. Vance Nurkala, another excellent professional drummer in the NW has a full-time teaching studio. Both studios offer video and audio recording, along with play-along accompaniment for students. The Drum Exchange also rents equipment to local, regional and national touring musicians.
