Used snare drums alone can cost $100 & up. Because of "vintage" collectors, the prices for used drums have actually increased, and used drums are beginning to cost MORE than newer drums.
Vintage drums MAY have a better sound, or not.
Sometimes, it's just the NAME of the drum that the collector is after.
These days, import (generally from Asia) drums are cheaper, and usually well made.For PRACTICAL use, less expensive generic drums are fine for students. The real question is: What happens when my kid quits, and I have to sell the drum? The answer is:
The most important thing is to put your money into lessons. Let me know what city you live, and I might be able help find a teacher, if you don't have one already. Private lessons, combined with concert band experience in school is the best guarantee that your child will stay with music.
Keep in mind, snare drums are included in a full drumset, as well, and sometimes it's important to establish the goals of the child in regards to playing in band and/or playing rock or jazz in jazz band, with a rock band, or the radio.
